Northeast Georgia History Center is a hands-on learning stop in Gainesville. Kids especially gravitate to the Tornado Simulator, which recreates the 1936 Gainesville tornado, plus hands-on exhibits and interactive stations. The grounds also include an 18th-century cabin and a working blacksmith shop, so part of the visit is outdoors and weather-dependent even though the main museum is indoor. It is engaging enough for kids and informative enough for grown-ups, a surprisingly useful combination.

Saturdays add live-animal encounters and discovery-dome programming for a livelier visit, while the dirt trails and suspension bridge beyond the paved trail suit older kids better than strollers.
